Okay ladies let's come to her rescue!
You might have to pump a little bit to reduce pressure. Don't empty yourself all the way because that tells your body to produce more. But you don't want to get a breast infection!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a mom yet, but I've heard the best thing to do is use cabbage leaves to help with engorgement. My friend who recently had a baby did this while in the hospital (she wasn't going to be able to BF) and it worked wonders. Follow this link for advice...

Random Ideas:
ReplyDelete1. try feeding him in different positions, lying down?
2. have you been eating spicy foods?
3. I would pump when he should be feeding, every 3 or so hours, just enough to relieve pressure. You can store that breast milk in the freezer for I think up to a year!
4. try feeding him after you've pumped when you aren't engorged.
Good luck!
Ok, I had to go through the same thing last year when I got pregnant and still had a young baby. My son refused to wean and take a bottle so my doctor said I had to just go cold turkey. I couldn't pump b/c I would keep producing milk and so I just had to take the pain. It was probably the worst pain I've gone through! I felt like I had to throw up and like I'd pass out if I tried to stand up. One thing that helped was to wrap them w/ an ace bandage really tight so that it would take away the pain and hold them for me. I also noticed not too long ago that at motherhood maternity they have something to wrap around your breasts especially made for this type of situation, I told my husband that would have been really nice. The 1st day is the worst, after that it just gradually gets better until you dry up. (the 2nd day wasn't too bad at all) I did hear about the cabbage leaves, but not until right after I had gotten over the pain. You could probably do that and wrap them up really tight! That's the only thing I can tell ya. Don't pump! Well unless it is just a tiny bit to relieve a little bit of the pain. But, you want to quit producing if your baby is really done nursing. Hopefully I'm not commenting to late to help. Good luck! (Oh btw, breast milk is fine up to a year in a freezer only if it's a deep freezer)
ReplyDeleteWhen I had to quit cold turkey (after 9 months), I was told by the lactation consultant at my hospital that I should pump just enough to make it softer and get the lumps out. YOU DON'T WANT TO GET MASTITIS!!! Trust me...it's the WORST.
ReplyDeleteShe also suggested to eat a lot of peppermint (peppermint altoids), sage (I bought coffee filters and made sage "tea") and sudafed (I took the max dose for a few days -- sudafed works for noses because it dries things up...but not just sinuses). I wasn't giving the baby the pumped milked...so you might want to check with someone before trying this stuff if you plan to give the baby the milk.
In 7-10 days it was done. Everytime I pumped it was less and less that I needed to get out and I gradually I could go for more and more hours in between every pumping.
She also advised against wrapping, claiming that would help after maybe 9 DAYS of BF, bot 9 MONTHS. Obviously everyone is different...but this is what worked for me. And I avoided another round of mastitis...which is what I was desperately trying to avoid.
If you dont want to stop just dont feed him anything else tell he nurses. I seriously have to do this like every other month with my 8 month old. When we stop it will be because I want to! lol Good luck!
