Brushing Baby Teeth

When do you start brushing your babies teeth and how do you do it?

Is there a baby toothpaste?

  1. When they have teeth, brush them. Get an extra soft baby toothbrush. I only did it once a day until their gums got used to it, then I went to a more regular schedule. I don't use toothpaste until they are two.

  2. They have baby toothbrushes and baby toothpaste. You want to make sure that if you use it that it doesn't have flouride in it. I actually used water to brush Abby's teeth until she was almost 2 and she takes the flouride drops.

  3. My father in law is a dentist and says you need to start brushing teeth AS SOON AS they have their first. I started baby tooth paste at some point...if they don't like brushing it can help if they enjoy the flavor. At two I switched to fluoride toothpaste. Speaking of which...you don't need fluoride drops here in VA (there's fluoride in the water) and too much fluoride will damage their teeth...so I'm sure your doctor wouldn't even prescribe it. (Places like some parts UT, however, don't have fluoride so they take drops or pills).

  4. I would be really careful about flouride supplements, cause it really can damage teeth. Baby orajel toothpaste is great- my son has never complained about brushing teeth because I got him a sweet toothbrush and tasty toothpaste!

  5. My pediatrician advised us to start as soon as my baby had teeth (so 4 months). She said you can start with a wash cloth and water. You just massage the gums and little teeth. Move on to a baby toothbrush later on.
