What is normal?

This question comes from Juls, one of my all time best roommates!

"My baby's head is pretty flat in the back and not very proportionate. Should I worry? Is it just because of the way he sleeps (on his back ALL the time?) I've been told not to worry, that baby's heads change and form for the first 6 months. What do you think?"

Lets hear it moms....

  1. I would ask your Pediatrician. My Dad is one and I know that he usually has Mom's try to rotate which side the babies head is turned to while they are asleep to keep it proportianate. Some of his patients actually have had to wear helmets if it got too mishapened. I'm not sure at what age it becomes a worrisome thing, but I know my Dad tries to have them work on this from the time they are little. Just an idea.

  2. Its important to make sure that you are giving them plenty of tummy time. This takes pressure of their heads. Also make sure that they are not spending the majority of their time in a carseat or bouncer. I also agree with Jill, to move their head when they are asleep from side to side. I would ask your doctor for sure though.

  3. I totally believe in mothers intuition, so if it is something that is concerning you, ask your pediatrician.

  4. Our pediatrician was worried about Bridger's head for a bit. We just had to be very conscious about switching the direction is head was when he layed down. For a while we even had to have him sleep on a sugar bag so he wouldn't roll to the other side. All those tricks worked for us...along with lots of tummy time :-)

  5. My daughter has a flat spot on the back, right side of her head. My doctor told me that it would go away but it didn't and so he recommended she go see a physical therapist. This has helped a lot because her neck muscles were really tight and she couldn't turn her head fully to either side. We tried lots of tummy time, rotating her head, and physical therapy and her flat spot still hasn't gone away. So she has to have a helmet because the head muscles will harden almost completely by the time they turn a year old. I guess just keep an eye out and make sure he can turn his head to both sides with very little effort. I would say if by 8 or 9 months if the flat spot hasn't gone away talk to your doctor about what you can do.
