She writes,
"Noah (the almost-two-year-old) just started figuring out how to escape from his crib. When we try to put him to bed, we have to fight him for at least an hour because as soon as we put him down, he climbs out. He thinks it is a game or something. I am afraid he is too young for a toddler bed, because if he won't stay in his crib, I don't know why he would stay in a bed. His escape from a bed would be even easier! But I don't know any other alternative. I need good tricks for making the transition to a toddler bed."
All three of my nieces were escape artists at a very young age when it came to their crib. They finally got a crib tent with the first and LOVED it. They are safe and I hear they are easy to install, plus the front part zips off so it is easy to get your baby in and out. They are also tall enough that your child can still stand and see out. We laughed when we first saw they had put it on, but with the risk the girls were putting themselves in, I totally understand now. Plus, their mom is a nurse, so I know she would never use a poor product choice. Type in "crib tent" and you should be able to find multiple places that sell them (inclusing Walmart.)
ReplyDeletelol! Please excuse any spelling errors. I just woke up!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter did the same thing around age 2 and so we went a got a toddler bed that was close to the ground with a side bar. She LOVED it, I think it made her feel excited and independant. The first few nights were hard, we had to go in and check on her every 10-15 min because she would get out and cry, but they get used to it. Once they know they won't win the battle of getting out, they stay in. We also had to put a lock on her toy box, pathetic I know, but she would stay up playing with toys, so we just took away toys, etc and she got used to the bed and loves it now.
ReplyDeleteMy son was in a toddler bed out of necessity at 13 months. He did fine! The first two nights he ended up getting down on the floor- but I never heard him fall- he just took his blanket and stuffed animal down there. After that, he loved it, and still does. If your child is two though, I would recommend trying a twin bed with an atachment side bar that you can buy- that way you don't have to buy yet another bed. Just get Noah involved with picking out the bed and new bedding and such and he'll most likely love it! Oh yeah, and shut the door at night!
ReplyDeleteSame thing from my son at 2. I figure is is way easier and more likely to get back into a toddler bed than the crib, so we made that switch and put a child handle on the inside of his door. He cried and kicked the door for a few days and in result slept on the floor but after a few days he realized his bed was more comfy and his antics werent working and slept in the bed. Good luck, not fun.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter didn't like the door closed so we used a tall, sturdy baby gate. She attempted to climb it at first, but couldn't get over. I have a friend turned the door handle around (so the lock was on the outside)...either because he could open the child proof handle or unlock the door...anyway...then he couldn't escape because it was locked from the outside. Whatever you try will probably involve tears...so I wish you the best luck!
ReplyDeleteMy boys did the same thing... it was just a game to them. For us it was easier to just get a bed (we never bothered with toddler beds--just invested in a "big boy bed" from the get go). Once we put them in a bed it wasn't a game anymore and they went to bed much easier.
