I have a serious objection to TV and babies....i think it depends on what age she is wondering about to give a answer directly to her, but here is what i think after going to school... I think that tv/movies for babies is always not a good idea. I think its just being used as a babysitter...not as a learning opportunity. Honestly it is used as a babysitter more for young children too. I think a periodical Disney movie...or the baby Enstine is ok by 3 years, but be choosy about what they are watching. I read in a book once that children watching tv and movies so early is being linked to Autism and ADD in children today, because of the fast images going at them and their brains inability to process them. Ok so i just went loose on this...guess i really feel strong about not doing it...If you use baby Enstine...which is a great program, make sure you sit there with them and talk to them about what they are seeing. Used it as a learning and bonding time...not just a babysitter.
Darn it's such a good babysitter, though! Ha ha. But I must agree- my children are hooked, because we didn't start controling it early enough. Now we do, but it's a lot of work, because they are always begging for it and trying to sneak it in! I seriously believe TV and Video games are connected with the milder forms of autism and ADD as well as all the sugar we are giving the kids- and that is just from an observing nurse, not from someone who has been educated in that field.
I think that Signing Time with Alex and Leah is great because it teaches sign language and is fun for the kids. We have borrowed a copy from a friend and Hallie loves it.
I have done the no-tv gig for my daughter who is 15 months. We will allow a little once she is 2, based off the AAP. I read all the effects it has on their little brains and that was enough for me to make the decision. There is also this interesting that was just in Time in the past few weeks. http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1914450,00.html
TV often gets a bad rap... but they can really learn a lot. Just use it in moderation. We don't have cable so I only let them watch PBS--such good educational material... everything from letters and numbers to math concepts!
TV for little kids doesn't sit right with me, but my husband--and child--don't agree, so we try to find a happy medium. He watches Sesame Street, and if he's going to be watching anything, I'm happy it's Sesame Street. I hate to admit it, but it has helped him learn to count to 13 and also some of his ABCs. And it isn't annoying for adults, and surprisingly entertaining.
when I think about TV for my kids I mostly get concerned about the negative attitudes that are portrayed how whiny and disrespectful even a little kid is so my favorite show is Handy Manny I also really like the Mickey mouse club house it is made to be educational for about 3 years old. I've been watching most of the shows and those are the best Kailey doesn't really like cartoons but she will watch the imagination movers and the fresh beat band she is 7 months so i try not to put ones she actually likes on personally I feel like by having the TV on but making she she is playing and not glued to it will make it more fun to play than to watch TV but if i Know what shows she likes and I really do need a baby sitter for a half hr I have one that works
This blog is for advice, stories, questions, support etc. that young mothers may have. I myself am a young, 27 year old, mother of two. A 3 1/2 year old girl and a 18 month old baby boy. I know I need help and imagine other mothers do too. I plan on posting questions etc. every few days and I hope that you, the readers, will respond by commenting. Let's help each other out!
