Definately yours, the doctors, and an emergency contact (like extended family in case they can't reach you). Also anything that is comforting if your child hasn't been with many sisters.
Recently I've realized that the things we think are just 2nd nature when we are watching children, are NOT realized by a young babysitter. For example: 1) if the baby is crying when you put in bed, it's okay to let him cry for a little while UNLESS he has a poopy diaper...don't let them go to sleep with a dirty diaper, 2) infants do not usually know how to fall asleep by themselves easily...rocking to sleep is easier and way less traumatic for everyone, 3) if you give kids as much milk/juice as they want, they will not eat dinner, 4) mostly, kids just want to play, don't try to make a rigid schedule, 5) the physical abilities of young children (the do's and do nots) should be layed out: ie. if they don't understand about the street, if they try to go down the fire-pole but are only 1-year-old, etc, 6) don't let them outside (if young children) without also following them, 7) if it's really cold outside, don't strip a baby down because they're crying and take them outside...he's probably just hungry or bored, 8) ...I'm sure there's more I can't think of at the moment. I know it's hard to go down a list like this verbally with people, but maybe if it's written out it would make it easier so the babysitter could reference it.
Wow...if Bonnie is speaking from personal experiences with baby-sitters, I hope I never get one of hers!! Stripping a baby down and taking them outside when it's really cold?!?! Why would someone do that?
This blog is for advice, stories, questions, support etc. that young mothers may have. I myself am a young, 27 year old, mother of two. A 3 1/2 year old girl and a 18 month old baby boy. I know I need help and imagine other mothers do too. I plan on posting questions etc. every few days and I hope that you, the readers, will respond by commenting. Let's help each other out!
