"I am starting to introduce my little 6 month old to solids. So far I have only given him rice cereal. I'm wondering what foods would be best to offer next. I've heard MIXED opinions about green vegetables, yellow vegetables, and fruit. I am persuadable and hope to get some good advice!"
So mom's let's give some good advice.
I have a 5 month old, but started him on rice cereal at 4. I only did rice till he was 5 month and then started alternating with rice and oatmeal. As far as fruits and veggies...i started with applesauce, then after a week did bananas (not a great plan cause applesauce and bananas are the most constipating foods...i didn't know this till he was having a problem and i looked it up...try to alternate those two fruits.) Now almost a month later i am up to prunes, pears and peaches too....i just introduce them every 4 days.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really started much on veggies out of my wanting to nurse him longer before he is so dependent on solids...but we have done squash and green beans.
Long post sorry!
I would skip the prunes if I were you. With my first, I thought I had to do every one of them one at a time, so I just happened to be on prunes when we were at a conference. What a huge mess that made all over the conference hall! It's really not necessary to do them all!
ReplyDeleteMy pediatrician actually recommended introducing vegetables before fruits and making sure they eat as many vegetables as fruits. She said if they have fruit too often, they can develop a sweet tooth and only want those. There must be some truth to it because my baby is 13 months now and she gobbles vegetables at dinner every single day. (She also gobbles fruit, but she likes vegetables just as much, if not more). I never worried about which fruit or which vegetable to do first and she never had a problem with anything.
ReplyDeleteCarrots at six months=awesomeness. Yellow vegetables are great.
ReplyDeleteI would definately start vegetables first, my experience is that kids like the fruits better and it is harder to get them to eat veggies if they have already had sweet fruit. Also, green vegetables tend to have a stronger taste and usually take babies several feedings before they like them so I would start with yellow first. Squash and carrots are both great. I am of course not a specialist, but now you have my two cents.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the veggies before fruits. Once they are hooked on the sweets its hard to go back. :) I did oatmeal cereal instead of rice because I believe there are more health benefits.
ReplyDeleteAhh i never thought about the sweet tooth part of starting with fruits! Thanks girls! But i have to say that squash and green beans are also his absolute favorites...Kyler humms through his veggie feedings! Makes me laugh every time!
