Amy asked a smart question that I never would have thought to ask, but now I want to know the answer to.
She asks, "Not all holiday traditions are REASONABLE to do with small children. What holiday traditions have you found to be successful with young children?"
We just started a new one. It's probably more for the preschool and up range, but the little ones enjoy watching, too. We go around the neighborhood and look at all the light displays, then we pick our favorite and go and give them a prize. They are always appreciative that others notice their hard work and it is a fun way to look at the lights.
I would say that foods are good for children starting at 6 months and up! Incorporating special holiday foods (like dessert crepes for breakfast Christmas morning) is something to look forward too, and something everyone can participate in at some level- helping cook, eating, shopping for ingredients, etc.
from the beginning we have always sung (is that really a word?) the song from the children's song book- The nativity and have the children hold up each piece as we sing about it. Even the little ones love to do that. We have a few chewed on sheep, but it's ok, because we use the wooden nativity I bought from Deseret book that was specifically for them!
Here are a few places for tradition ideas... some are GREAT for little kids and others will have to wait until they are older. Christmas movie night are always fun... or going around to look at christmas lights while listening to christmas music. leaving cookies out for santa. acting out the christmas story... http://placetobloom.blogspot.com/2009/11/countdown-to-christmas-part-ii.html http://placetobloom.blogspot.com/2009/11/holiday-traditions-with-bloom-guest.html
This blog is for advice, stories, questions, support etc. that young mothers may have. I myself am a young, 27 year old, mother of two. A 3 1/2 year old girl and a 18 month old baby boy. I know I need help and imagine other mothers do too. I plan on posting questions etc. every few days and I hope that you, the readers, will respond by commenting. Let's help each other out!
